Post-Traumatic Growth

Resilience is the ability to recover and adapt to a stressor. Stresses can be physical (like an injury), and they can also be psychological (like a traumatic event). When a bone breaks and heals, the healed area grows back knitting together to be stronger than it was before the break.

Similarly, when we heal a psychological trauma, we develop psychological resilience and therefore more strength to handle any future experiences. If our ability to heal the trauma is blocked, the trauma lives on through the memory of the body in the form of activated survival instincts and becomes slowly destructive.

Feeling anxious, stressed, depressed, fearful, aggressive, and even physical ailments can be signs of incomplete (unhealed) trauma. Undetected, this is when the trap of ‘endurance’ occurs, and instead of healing – we dissociate from the pain, and endure daily life as the trauma quietly weakens us. Post-traumatic growth is the result of a healed trauma, and feels like peace, restoration, and calm strength.
