Five Myths About Psychotherapy – How to Avoid a Bad Therapist

Making the decision to speak to a psychologist or a psychotherapist is a very personal choice. Your therapist should be the right fit for your goals and needs. Many people can walk away from a bad session and blame themselves. Others can spend ages in therapy without results, and think they are at fault.  If you are considering therapy, or are evaluating your ongoing therapy – here are some myths you may want to consider to avoid a bad therapist.

MYTH 1: “Therapy is about pointing out what’s wrong with me.” 

Psychotherapy is understanding your thoughts and emotions.Your therapist should never blame or shame you, but help you to develop insight, compassion, and skills for happier living.  Although inner work can be hard work, it should also be rewarding. If it feels negative or hyper-critical…it’s not you, it’s me.

MYTH 2: “Therapy is for life.” 

Therapy is often structured for weekly sessions, and can continue for an average of six months. Individual cases may vary according to your individual circumstances. You should benefit along the way, and many people benefit from intermittent sessions or just one session. If it’s taking years and you don’t feel any different…it’s not you, it’s me.

MYTH 3: “My therapist will tell me what to do.” 

Psychotherapy is interactive and collaborative. Your therapist is not a guru, but can help facilitate your personal healing, self-discovery, and self-trust. These are your rewards to enjoy! If your confidence doesn’t start to improve…it’s not you, it’s me.

MYTH 4: “I’m not messed up enough!” 

You don’t have to be in dire straits to go to therapy. Personal growth, increased capacity for love, and a stronger mind are all outcomes of good therapy. If you don’t feel respected….it’s not you, it’s me.

MYTH 5: “I’m too messed up.” 

Did you know that your age, gender, ‘diagnosis’ or previous history do not predict your results in therapy? It’s your therapist. When you find a good fit, it just works. If you get the feeling that your therapist believes that you are a lost cause…it’s not you, it’s me.
